All these years, I really have just laughed off most of what my big sister has told me. Mainly because anytime we are together we are busy just joking around. For those of you who know us, you understand why I was surprised. As I continued to grow my practice I had the following revelation;
MY SISTER WAS RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those of you that do not, well…. I guess I’ll have to write another post to accompany this one. (Too much to overload your brain with at this very moment)
Outsourcing to grow your practice.
Long story short, yes people, she was right!
I know, I have been wrestling with this statement for some time now, in fact, it is almost gut-wrenching to admit, but the time has come and I have to give her credit.
As I began building my business, I was working with family members. Helping to design product launches of personal business ideas and preaching about the power of social media marketing. One afternoon I had my sister and her son over to visit. Our kids enjoyed time with the newest video game as we caught up on recent events in life.
I was telling her about our mission for the business and the projects currently in play. The whole idea is to help everyone we know; leverage the power of the internet, define S.M.A.R.T. goals to create a personal path and grow the lifestyle we all deserve. We began discussing the idea of her owning her own business, defining goals and creating an outlined plan of steps to take to accomplish each. She began telling me all about a business idea she had been thinking of for years and how she just didn’t think it was going to be possible. (A feeling we are all familiar with and have experienced at some point in life, no matter where we are today!)
The excitement in her eyes made this day an unforgettable one. This was a moment of recognition, a true wake up call. This was a look I had not seen on my sister’s face for a long time and that is when I knew that what I was doing was right.
I had inspired someone and in turn, I had been inspired!
I told her to begin jotting down her ideas to start her first business plan. We agreed to touch base the following weekend and I was in shock! In under a week, my sister had compiled a wealth of information surrounding her idea, she even had a draft of her first business plan. She proudly handed over her folder packed with information and I began sifting through.
While taking in all that was presented, I stopped her and requested that we start with her business plan draft.
(Those of you who know us are probably just as anxious as I was to hear what was written!)
The plan began with a simple description of her idea and lead into a list of things to do. I was so proud to see the amount of effort she had put into preparing for our conversation! The first item on the to-do list was to name her new business. Ok, maybe not the ideal starting place, but she had a start and that is what matters.
The second action item on the list is what changed the conversation and looking back now, I was wrong and yes, she was right!
(A couple of you who do know us just fell out of your chairs, I know, take a minute, gather yourself. I’m serious, I know this may be hard to swallow but she knew the trick before I did!)
The second item on her to-do list…. “Find someone to do the work.”
I had to stop her when I read it. It was perhaps the funniest thing I had seen written on paper in years, at least I thought so!
Really, find someone to do the work!
I have always been about doing the work, and in the beginning, as an Entrepreneur, you have to do the work to get started.
However, if you ever intend to be more and grow, you too must find someone to do the work!
